The Carepa river has a huge rise and fall. With prolonged heavy rainfall the river washes over the top of the riverbank. The speed of the water, and its erosive power, is increased by sand mining upriver. A commercial sand mining operation takes out around 200 large lorryloads of sand daily and this increases the speed and changes the course of the river. In this area at the edge of Carepa city, known as El PlayĆ³n, people stand on the riverbank and survey the erosion from the previous night. The edge of the river bank is now less than 10m from houses.
