A statue of Christ crucified stands in the Hambach forest near Bonn where the UN climate change negotiations are taking place.
Protesters are occupying the Hambach forest, living in tree-houses to prevent the expansion of the mine. This mining area near Bonn is Europe’s greatest source of CO2 emissions. While there is very broad consensus that we need to stop mining coal, coal mines such as this continue to expand, and finance for fossil fuels extraction is still available, in many countries there are subsidies for fossil fuels but not renewable energy.
WCC, the LWF and ACT Alliance take part in the UN climate change conferences to push for climate justice and care for creation.
