In 2016, some colleagues successfully started a new tradition for the WCC, running in Geneva's traditional Escalade race as team Pilgrims for Justice and Peace. Despite Geneva's chilly wind being particularly biting during the 2017 edition, a valiant team of runners upheld the tradition, and a few walkers added themselves to the effort.
L'Escalade, or FĂȘte de l'Escalade (from escalade, the act of scaling defensive walls) is an annual festival held in December in Geneva, Switzerland, celebrating the defeat of the surprise attack by troops sent by Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy during the night of 11-12 December 1602. The celebrations and other commemorative activities are usually held on 12 December or the closest weekend.
The Escalade running race is a more recent and popular Geneva tradition that is usually held in the first week of December. Distances run vary from 2-8 kms depending on the category. All the races take place in the narrow streets of the old town and finish in the Bastion Park. In 2017, more than 50000 runners signed up, and each year the number grows.
Across the road, participants will find any kind of cheering groups, from families singing escalade songs to traditional brass bands. At the end of the race, runners receive water, hot soup, bread and a race's souvenir that will remind them of the great experience.
