Before descending the marble steps of the chapel, the visitor symbolically passes through waters recalling baptism. Though the churches are not united, all Christians share this “bond of unityâ€. On the wall is a mosaic of Christ’s baptism in the Jordan, a copy of an 11th century original from Daphne, Greece, offered by the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
A spiritual heart: the ecumenical chapel.
The chapel is the spiritual heart of the Ecumenical Centre and its design is richly symbolic in nature. Staff gather here for weekly worship services, daily prayer and special events. The chapel is not specific to any one tradition, and is designed to recall a tent, proclaiming that the churches are on a pilgrimage towards unity and that Christian divisions are provisional.
